Understanding Pet Problems

About a year after I purchased my dog, I realized that he was really struggling with his health. He just wasn't his lively self, and I was concerned that he was slowly dying. I decided to take him to a veterinarian to have his condition diagnosed, and we were able to learn a lot about his health. Within a few short months, he was on the road to recovery, and I was really grateful that I had done the work to make things better. This blog is all about understanding pet problems and knowing when to seek professional veterinary help.

A Guide To Choosing The Right Place To Board Your Cat For A Month Or More For The First Time

by Ann Nelson

Given that cats are known for being self-sufficient, lone creatures who often do well when left to their own devices during the day, they are frequently an ideal pet for single persons and career-oriented couples who work a lot. However, when it becomes necessary to leave the kitty alone for an extended period of time, their ongoing care is likely to become much more complex, as doing so isn't recommended. Fortunately, kennels and catteries are both viable options that can help you to meet the needs of your cat. Therefore, it's a good idea to have the following information about each of those options so that when the time comes, you can be sure that your cat is in the best place when he or she cannot be with you.

Considering The Kennel

A common option for boarding cats that also tends to be quite affordable is the kennel. If your cat is a social creature who occasionally enjoys the company of other kitties, the kennel is often the best choice. However, it should be pointed out that while the kennel is quite popular and you will often be permitted to house your pet in a private kennel, it's not unusual for those kennels to be stored quite close to another. You should expect for employees to be able to answer your series of questions, so a tour and screening of the entire area is a responsible step.

Since many of the cats that stay temporarily at a professional kennel will not be there for the same prolonged period of time that your pet is expected to, fussy or easily upset cats might not do well there. In addition, kennels are often the temporary home of dogs and even though they may not be right next door, your kitty might not be thrilled to be there. Therefore, if you choose for your cat to stay in a kennel, it will behoove you to examine the area ahead of time to make sure that there is a sufficient and appropriate area for your kitty to enjoy when he or she is away from home. If it doesn't meet your standards, the cattery is another viable option to consider.

Planning To Use A Cattery

A cattery, as its name suggests, specializes in the boarding of cats. As a result, the unique needs of felines are often best met in a cattery, particularly if your kitty has a specific or unusually high intolerance of dogs. While the specialization of kitty boarding might mean that it presents with a slightly higher cost than a kennel, its privacy can make your kitty happier in your absence. Some catteries specialize in providing care and feeding for pregnant felines, if that is a concern for you.

It is a good idea to remember that some catteries have been endorsed or recommended for specific breeds of cats. Although each cattery should be expected to meet the needs of any cat in their care for any period of time, designer, competing, gestating or otherwise particularly valuable felines might be more comfortable spending several weeks of their lives in a facility that has experience caring for similar creatures. For instance, your big Maine Coon might be happier surrounded by other big cats while the diminutive Scottish Fold Cat could easily feel overwhelmed being surrounded by bigger breeds.

In conclusion, choosing where to board your cat for a month or more at a time is often a more complex and time-consuming endeavor than it is to determine an appropriate place to permit your beloved feline for a briefer period of time. As a result, it's best to be aware of the options provided above when you are making that important decision.
