Understanding Pet Problems

About a year after I purchased my dog, I realized that he was really struggling with his health. He just wasn't his lively self, and I was concerned that he was slowly dying. I decided to take him to a veterinarian to have his condition diagnosed, and we were able to learn a lot about his health. Within a few short months, he was on the road to recovery, and I was really grateful that I had done the work to make things better. This blog is all about understanding pet problems and knowing when to seek professional veterinary help.

Why You Should Purchase A Miniature Schnauzer

by Ann Nelson

When you are picking a dog breed for your household, don't pass over the miniature schnauzer. The miniature schnauzer makes a great dog for most homes, but will it fit into your lifestyle? Learn more about the benefits of purchasing a pet miniature schnauzer.

Manageable Size

Miniature schnauzers grow to about 12 - 14 inches tall and 12 - 20 pounds, making them a medium-sized dog. As medium-sized dogs, they are small enough to comfortably enjoy apartment living and city living  They do have an average energy level for a dog, so they'll still need regular playtime and stimulation throughout the day. With regular walks, they shouldn't get restless as long as they have toys and mental stimulation. They do have enough energy to keep up with an active lifestyle, too. Since they're highly adaptable dogs, they'll adjust to their owner.

Low Maintenance

Miniature schnauzers are famous for their bushy eyebrows and long beard. The rest of the coat is a hard, wiry coat that comes in three main color patterns: salt and pepper, black and silver, and solid black. The coat is relatively low-maintenance only requiring semi-regular grooming. Miniature schnauzers do shed a bit, but it is nothing you can't manage by vacuuming and dusting a couple of times a week.

Loyal

Miniature schnauzers often come across as having human expressions due to their unique facial hair and high intelligence. The high intelligence allows schnauzers to connect with their owners quickly. Once miniature schnauzers develop a relationship with their owner, they become extremely loyal to them and everyone else in the family, including children. Schnauzers are as loving as they are loyal, so they are sure to show you plenty of love. They are very protective, making them effective guard dogs as well.

Longevity

Schnauzers have an average life expectancy of 10 - 12 years, which is around the average life expectancy for all breeds of dogs. They are relatively healthy dogs, but owners should look out for cataracts, hyperlipidemia, pancreatitis, liver shunts, and urinary stones. Regular vet visits should keep you aware of any foreseeable health concerns before they happen.

Miniature schnauzers are pure-breed dogs so you should expect to pay a good amount of money for your new schnauzer puppy unless you're lucky enough to find one at a shelter. When you are ready to purchase a miniature schnauzer, you can't go wrong no matter where you get it.
